"Dayton Football Releases 2008 Schedule"

The Rick Chamberlin era of University of Dayton football will begin on Sunday, August 31 when the Flyers open the 2008 season. The 12-game 2008 UD football schedule is highlighted by eight games against fellow Pioneer Football League opponents, as well as four non-conference contests.

Dayton will open the 2008 season in Central State University's "Dayton Classic IV" at Welcome Stadium on Sunday, August 31. The Flyers will wear their white road jerseys for the first time at Welcome, since it is a home game for Central State. After a weekend off, UD will play a pair of non-conference home games against Fordham (Saturday, September 13) and Robert Morris (Saturday, September 20). Dayton will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule at Duquesne on Saturday, September 27. This will be the Dukes' first appearance on the schedule since 2002.

The Flyers will begin the defense of their 2007 Pioneer Football League co-championship against new PFL member Campbell on Saturday, October 4. While it is UD's league opener, the Camels will have two PFL games under their humps before coming to Dayton.

The remainder of the Pioneer Football League schedule is as follows: Drake at home on Saturday, October 11, at Davidson on Saturday, October 18, Valparaiso at home on Saturday, October 25, at 2007 PFL co-champ San Diego on Saturday, November 1, at Butler on Saturday, November 8, Morehead state at home on Saturday, November 15 and at Jacksonville on Saturday, November 22.

The 2008 Gridiron Classic will be played on Saturday, December 6 pitting the champions of the PFL and the Northeast Conference at the NEC winner's home field.

Flyers return 11 of 22 starters from last year's 11-1 team that was voted the Sports Network FCS Mid-Major National Champions after defeating #3 Albany 42-21 in the Gridiron Classic Bowl Game. UD also claimed the co-championship in the PFL, the school's ninth league title in the last 15 years. Dayton ended the season ranked #24 overall in the final FCS Coaches Poll.

A pair of Sports Network FCS Mid-Major First Team All-Americans -- defensive end Scott Vossler and defensive tackle Kalen Hemmelgarn -- headline the Dayton returnees.
