WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- Economists are bracing for a weak showing in the August employment report, which is scheduled to be released today.

The anemic economy is causing companies to conserve cash and hold back on hiring. While most economists expect the nation to avoid another recession, they say growth will likely be so weak for the rest of this year that the jobless rate could move back above 10 percent by early next year. That would raise pressure on the Federal Reserve to do more to jump start the economy.

Strickland's speech gained momentum as he accused Kasich of hiding his tax records, which Strickland said shows Kasich earned approximately $1,000 an hour as a fellow at Ohio State University.

BUXTON, N.C. (AP) -- Rain squalls and gusting winds from Hurricane Earl are becoming more pronounced along the North Carolina Outer Banks.

The National Weather Service reports winds on the barrier islands were gusting to around 40 mph Thursday night as Earl's eye moved closer.

On Hatteras Island, winds started to drive the rain sideways by about 9:30 p.m. and roadside signs were shaking.

Forecasters say the worst winds should come after midnight as Earl passes about 50 miles to the east of the Outer Banks. Gusts of up to hurricane force are possible.

The weather service says storm surge could be up to 5 feet and waves could be up to 18 feet. The storm's closest approach will come at about high tide.

Explanation for odor over Tipp City

TIPP CITY, Ohio -- An odor over much of the city is coming from a sludge lagoon in Monroe Township.

City Manager Jon Crusey says the Tipp Top Canning lagoon receives process water and tomato peels from the processing plant on First Street. As it biodegrades, it creates an odor.

Crusey says the winds were coming from the east Thursday morning and the odor carried over the city. Crusey says the company installed aerators to speed up the process.

He says the lagoon has been around about 40 years and occasionally there is an issue with odor.

Resident Victoria Webber wondered what was causing the odor. She said it smelled like "someone tipped over an outhouse."

Two elderly women conned out of over $13,000

OAKWOOD, Ohio -- Police and consumer leaders admit there is not a lot they can do about it.

Our partners at the Dayton Daily News report that two elderly Oakwood women were conned out of over $13,000 in recent weeks.

Callers claiming to be grandsons or nephews told the women they were in jail in other countries and desperately needed bail money.

Ohio's attorney general has sent out two alerts in the past 18 days warning people not to wire money, especially overseas, after an unexpected call.

Police say the July 31 case was especially cruel. The woman's husband had died days earlier. Police believe the scammer got the grandson's name out of an on-line obituary.

Both women sent the money through Western Union. The company says agents are trained to spot fraud, but some criminals stay ahead of the game.

Ohio Attorney General Spokesman Ted Hart says once the money leaves the country, there is little chance to recover it.
