Over a dozen 5th-grade students returning from school trip injured after bus crash in Clinton County

CLINTON COUNTY — Over a dozen 5th graders returning from a school trip were injured after a bus crash in Clinton County Monday afternoon.

Just after 3 p.m., Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were called to the area of SR-72 near Stone Road for reports of a crash with injuries, according to state troopers.

An initial investigation found that an East Clinton Local Schools bus was traveling on SR-72 before it went off the right side of the roadway and hit two culverts, a mailbox, and a ditch.

The bus had 37 students on board, 14 students were taken to the hospital by medics or their parents for minor injuries, state troopers said.

The driver of this bus, Tonya Kimball, 40, of New Vienna, was not injured and charged with operating a vehicle without reasonable control.

Eric Magee, Superintendent of East Clinton Local Schools said in a statement to News Center 7:

“There was an accident that resulted in several students being transported to the hospital to be checked out for what appear to be minor injuries. A full investigation, both internally and by the State Highway Patrol are underway. These situations are stressful for everyone involved, especially the students. We are thankful that the accident was not more serious than it was.”

According to Magee, the students were on the way back to school from a field trip to Cosi in Columbus.

Three teachers were on the bus with the students at the time of the crash.
