Judge Hopes Never-Ending Sentencing Hearing Ends
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- A federal court is hoping to wrap up what a judge has described as the longest sentencing hearing he has ever seen.
The sentence is expected Tuesday for investment adviser Mark Lay, who was convicted of fraud charges in the loss of $216 million at the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation.
The hearing in Akron broke off Thursday, after a full day of testimony that U.S. District Judge David D. Dowd Jr. said would "boggle the mind."
Forty-four-year-old Lay spent three hours on the stand and accepted blame for a hedge fund's losses but denied any criminal wrongdoing.
The founder of now defunct MDL Capital Management of Pittsburgh faces up to 20 years in prison but is expected to receive less under federal sentencing guidelines.
