Text Messages Reminders for Teens to Take Meds

05/12/2008 15:30:23

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- Doctors in Cincinnati are turning to text messages to remind kids to take their medicine.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital now is trying to remind patients with short notes sent automatically to cell phones. Cincinnati asthma specialist Dr. Maria Britto says she often saw patients spend their entire doctor's visit texting.

So, now she adds to their inbox. Sometimes, she says, you have to get in the kids' faces.

Studies show teens often do a poor job controlling their chronic illness like asthma and diabetes. As teens are growing, missing medication could really hurt them later on.

Sixteen-year-old Kabrina Moton of Cincinnati says she often skipped her asthma medication. But now, when the text message arrives at 7 every night, she takes a minute to take her medication.
