South Bound I-75 is Re-open

06/17/2008 14:31:57

DAYTON, Ohio -- The Ohio State Patrol confirms that southbound Interstate 75 is re-open this morning just south of Needmore Road after a semi damaged an overpass yesterday afternoon.

The Ohio Department of Transportation sign crews are adding some permanent signs warning of low clearances along Interstate 75 north of Dayton in the wake of a Monday accident that damaged the underside of an overpass at Timber Lane.

"We're putting up signs in the area of Neva Drive and Little York Road just to help raise awareness that there are some low bridges over the highway," said Denise Heitkamp, an ODOT spokeswoman.

The accident happened when a semi carrying a crane hit a bridge, causing a steel beam from the bridge to dangle. Investigators said the boom on the crane was too high to squeeze under the bridge and struck it, causing structural damage.

The Timber Lane overpass will remain closed indefinitely until it is evaluated by engineers.
The State Patrol says truck driver Robert Asbury, of Hanson Pipe & Precast of Sidney, will be charged with exceeding the height limit. Repairs to the bridge could cost $300,000 to $400,000.
