MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) -- A slumping economy has prompted a central Ohio groups to send out a call for used or borrowed soap box derby cars.
North Central Ohio Soap Box Derby Association director Chuck Ridenour says the average car costs about 500 dollars -- a pretty steep price for some families struggling to get by. He says recycling the cars might be the only way to keep kids in Mansfield barreling down their hill.
Ridenour says a lot of cars are sitting in basements and collecting dust. He says those cars could be put into a pool for more youngsters to compete even if their families can't afford new cars in the slowing economy.
