Man Claims he was Framed in Death of Dayton Nun
05/09/2008 16:21:58
BELEM, Brazil (AP) -- A Brazilian rancher accused of hiring a Dayton native-nun's killer says he liked the slain activist and that officials tried to frame him.
Vitalmiro Moura was acquitted this week on charges he ordered the killing of 73-year-old Dorothy Stang, who was born in Dayton, Ohio. Moura tells The Associated Press that he was a victim of prosecutors bent on finding a bad guy.
Moura says he never met Stang but admired her work to protect children and the rain forest.
Stang's brother questioned Moura's sincerity.
Stang was gunned down at close range by six shots from a revolver in an area known for land-related violence, contract killings and wanton environmental destruction. A gunman confessed to the shooting.
