Local Truckers Reduce Speed To Save Fuel
03/24/2008 10:40:08
FRANKLIN, Ohio (AP) -- Truck drivers are keeping pedal away from the metal as they try to conserve diesel fuel that's now topping $4 a gallon.
While filling up in Franklin in southwest Ohio, Debra Turner said her trucking company now limits its drivers' speeds to 66 miles per hour. Truckers and industry officials say slowing a tractor-trailer rig from 75 miles an hour to 65 increases fuel mileage by more than a mile a gallon.
Arthur Browne of Hamilton drives for a moving company and says he tries to stay at 65 to save fuel and money. He says customers pay a fuel surcharge that's passed along to the drivers, but he says the fee isn't keeping up with soaring diesel prices.
