03/24/2008 10:11:17
ZOAR, Ohio (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a leaking levee in eastern Ohio is not in imminent danger of failure but has experienced an excessive amount of seepage. Col. Dana Hurst says the Corps hopes to have the problem stabilized within three days.
Hurst and Gov. Ted Strickland spoke last night at a public meeting attended by about 100 people in Zoar in Tuscarawas County.
Hurst said last week's rains and flooding have damaged the levee administered by the Corps. The lower part of Zoar, a historic village of fewer than 200, would be affected by further flooding. Hurst says An excessive amount of seepage has started to move soil and earth in the levee.
