City of Dayton Plans to Acquire Abandoned Properties

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- Officials in Dayton say the city plans to acquire up to 1,000 properties this year that have been abandoned by owners who do not pay their property taxes. In many cases, the city has had to board up the structures and mow lawns.
The goal is to reduce excess housing and identify potential areas for development and eventually create parks, neighborhood squares and nature preserves.
The city will have to create a quasi-government authority to hold the properties.
Officials estimate the city has more than 10,000 vacant housing units in more than 3,800 structures.
